About Coonoor

Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris, surrounded by tea plantations, at an altitude of 1839 metres. Climate is better and sweeter than Ooty. Very popular weekend get away for the people cure for health and leisure in Coimbatore. Coonoor is essentially a small tea garden town where the weather remains pleasantly cool throughout the year.Coonoor is on the toy-train line between Mettupalayam (28 km) and Ooty. A popular pastime is bird watching, as an extensive variety of birds can be spotted.

Coonoor provides the traveler with the panoramic view of the lush green Nilgiri hills, with its ravines, valleys, and waterfalls. Bird watching is a popular pastime in Coonoor, as the area boasts of a large variety of species like cormorants, pipits, thrushes, parakeets, skylarks, Nilgiri verditer, etc. Travellers can take a walk through the tea gardens. There are number of trekking and hiking trails around Coonoor. Travelers can enjoy the exhilarating and unique ride on the toy train that connects Coonoor with Mettupalayam and Ooty. The trip provides some breathtaking views of the Nilgiri hills in all its natural glory.

1. Sim's Park - This is a beautiful park famous for vivid varieties of fruits. Thus, it is a very important site for the tourists.

2. Dolphin Nose - This is a Dolphin shaped unbelievable rock which should undoubtedly visited by tourists. From this point the tourists can view almost the whole expansion of the beautiful Nilgiri hills. Catherine Falls can be viewed from here. This famous point is about 10 km away from Coonoor.

3. Lamb's Rock - It is a splendid landscape having beautiful carvings imposed on it. It is on the way to the dolphine nose.

Visiting Time

Though Coonoor has a beautiful weather but even then it is best to visit this place during March to July and between August, September and October.

History

Britishers developed Ooty as a very popular hill station for them to avoid the devastating Indian summer. But,soon Ooty became a popular tourist spot and lost its charm by the high traffic of visitors visiting the place.Soon a need was felt to have another eqally beatiful hill station.This gave birth to Coonoor.The grassy meadows, lovely sunflowers, marigolds and rhododendrons became a benchmark for this beautiful hill station. Throughout the year pollution free cool breeze pass through the entire hill station.

The Toda tribes belong to this Region.
Tourist Spots

1. Ooty - Is about 13 kms. from Coonoor, which is have two seasons every year to attract the tourist. Ooty is about 2240 meters above the sea level which has tourist attraction of lake, Doddabetta, Rose Garden, Pykara Boat House and shooting spot.

2. Kotagiri - This place is about 21 kms from Coonoor.It is famous for Coffee plantations, Elk Falls, Rangaswamy Pillar and Peak, Kodanand view point.

3. Mudumalai –An ideal adventurous place, located in Nilgiri Hills, where the offshoot of the Western Ghats meet the Eastern Ghats. Area :32,155 hectares. Along side the adventures of the sanctuary, you will also find a varied mixture of flat land, open grassland, swamp, valley and nullas at this place.

The Famous Mudumalai wild life Sanctuary is situated at an elevation of 1000 metres and extending over an area of 321 sq.mts lies this sanctuary between Kerala and Karnataka states. Langur, bonnet macaque, tiger, leopard, wild dog, hyena, jackal, sloth bear, elephants, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, Indian muntjac, mouse deer, wild boar, rodent and flying squirrel are part of the wildlife in Mudumalai. This is one of India's best sanctuaries.

Mudumalai wildlife reserve was the first sanctuary in south India. Within the sanctuary is an elephant camp called "Theppakkadu". The Bamboo Banks Farm that is 18-km away.

Other places important places near Coonoor are Lady Canning's seat, the Pomological Station and the Ralliah Dam.Coonoor’s has many hillocks which are perfect for trekking.This place attracts tourists for birdwatching as an extensive variety of birds can be spotted at the Nilgiris. Various species of vultures, eagles and owls, song birds like bulbuls, thrushes, babblers, larks, cuckoos, robins and several others act as melodious music for the visitors who are accustomed to the huzzle and buzzzle of city sound pollution. Tea Coffee festival during the winters and fruits & vegetable festival arranged during the month of May are quite fasinating for the tourists.

Communication

By Air : Coimbatore airport is nearest to Coonoor, it has daily flights to and from Madras, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Deli, Mangalore, Goa and Ahmadabad.

By Rail : Toy train route between Mettupalayam and Ooty has Coonoor in its route. Another alternative is from Coimbatore, it takes around 3 hrs to Coonoor.

By Road : Regular bus services from Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Trivandrum, Madurai, Mysore, Pondicherry, Ooty and Kotagiri makes Coonoor well connected.
